National Evaluation finds Standards for Excellence Program Worthy of Replication. (7/26/06) National evaluators who closely studied the Standards for Excellence Institute's Pilot Replication program have issued their final report. Among other findings, the evaluators reported that the Standards for Excellence program was readily replicated in a variety of formats, that it strengthened the state associations that undertook replication and that it was having a positive impact on governance and management practices of nonprofits in the respective communities. Read full report here. Standards for Excellence Institute Announces First Group of Licensed Consultants Expanding Licensee Presence to 14 States or Territories. (6/1/06) As part of its ongoing effort to make the Standards for Excellence widely available to nonprofits nationwide, the Standards for Excellence Institute announced that it has approved its first group of Licensed Consultants. The Institute now has licensed Replication Partners and Licensed Consultants in 14 states and territories. View Press Release and Licensed Consultants (6/01/06) Standards for Excellence Institute Selected as Technical Assistance and Training Provider for National and Regional Foundations (4/1/06). The Standards for Excellence Institute announced that it has been awarded grants by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Miami, FL. to provide customized technical assistance to selected grantees of the Foundation, nationally. Similar grant awards have been made by the Annie E. Casey Foundation to provide organizational assessments, technical assistance and training for a cohort of its Maryland grantees and by the Carl Freeman Foundation to provide intensive Standards training to two cohorts of its grantees in both Maryland and Delaware. Standards for Excellence Institute Participates in U.S. Senate Finance Committee Roundtable on Board Governance (3/6/06). On Friday March 3, 2006, the staff of the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance convened a day-long roundtable discussion on the subject of nonprofit board governance. Standards for Excellence Institute CEO, Peter V. Berns, was one of a select group of national nonprofit leaders participating in the by-invitation-only roundtable. The morning session focused on a broad range of governance issues, including discussion of board size and compensation of foundation trustees. Standards Featured in Carnegie Results (9/23/05) The Standards for Excellence program was featured in the Carnegie Corporation of New York's Fall 2005 newsletter. National Certification Program Launched (7/21/05) Organizations across the country can now apply to become certified under the Standards for Excellence voluntary certification program, and be awarded the Seal of Excellence. More>> Institute Featured in New Rating the Raters Study (7/5/05) A joint task force of the National Human Services Assembly and the National Council of Nonprofit Associations conducted a study of the most well-known organizations and publications that provide charitable nonprofit organizations rating and/or rankings. The Standards for Excellence Institute is one of five organizations profiled in the final report, titled Rating the Raters. The report is intended to help nonprofits and others understand how standard-setting organizations measure and rate nonprofits. 100th Nonprofit Certified (5/16/05) On May 16, 2005 the Standards for Excellence Institute announced that more than 100 nonprofit organizations have been certified under state-level Standards for Excellence programs, nationwide. Comments to the Committee on Ways and Means on the Tax-Exempt Sector (5/6/05) The Standards for Excellence Institute appreciated the opportunity to submit comments as the Ways and Means Committee undertakes a broad review of issues concerning the tax-exempt, nonprofit sector in the United States. Leadership Roundtable Report on Church Management Recommends Standards for Excellence (3/14/05) The National Leadership Roundtable on Church Management, a new nonprofit formed to address the "financial and management crisis unfolding in the Catholic Church," released a report detailing recommendations from a leadership conference held at the Wharton School last year. The Report recommends that the US Conference of Catholic Bishops adopt an "appropriate version of the Standards for Excellence ... as the performance benchmark for pastoral and finance councils as well as other Church-affiliated oversight entities." Standards for Excellence Institute CEO participates in Mini Conference on Improving Self-Regulation in the Nonprofit Sector (1/31/05) The invitation only Mini Conference was convened the National Center on Philanthropy and the Law of the New York University School of Law to provide advice about nonprofit sector self-regulation to Independent Sector's Panel on the Nonprofit Sector. WestVirginia Legislature Hears Testimony About Standards for Excellence. (1/11/05) In response to an invitation from the Joint Standing Committe on Government Organization, Subcommittee A-2, the Standards for Excellence Institute joined the West Virginia Community Development Partnership to present information about replicating the Standards program in West Virginia. New Regulations Proposed for Nonprofits Serving Blind & Disabled. (11/12/04) The Federal goverment's Committee for Purchase from People Who are Blind or Severely Disabled has published proposed regulations which, if adopted, would impose new governance standards on nonprofits funded under the Javits-Wagner-O'Day Act. Standards for Excellence Institute CEO joins Oversight and Self-Regulation Work Group of Panel on the Nonprofit Sector. (12/7/04) The Panel was formed by Independent Sector at the request of the US Senate Committee on Finance to consider and recommend changes to the system of charity regulation. (10/29/04) The Louisiana Association of Nonprofit Organizations ("LANO"), a replication partner of the Standards for Excellence Institute, announced the first class of 22 nonprofit organizations achieving certification under the Louisiana Standards for Excellence. Louisiana Association of Nonprofit Organizations awarded Standards for Excellence seal. (10/28/04) The Standards for Excellence Institute announced today that Louisiana Association of Nonprofit Organizations was awarded the national Standards for Excellence seal. (10/18/04) A new research study released by The Forbes Funds documents that high performing nonprofits in the Pittsburgh area have practices that align well with the Standards for Excellence. (10/1/04) The Center for Community Based Organizations, a newly formed management support organization serving nonprofits in Contra Costa County, California, explored Ethics, Transparency and Accountability as the theme for the first annual meeting. Keynote Speaker, Peter V. Berns, Chief Executive Officer of the Standards for Excellence Institute, urged the attendees to make ethics and accountability the centerpiece of their new organization. The Hearst Foundation Approves Grant to Support Standards. (9/30/04) The Standards for Excellence Institute is pleased to announce that the Hearst Foundation of New York, NY has approved a grant to support the national replication of the Standards for Excellence. Fact Sheet on the Continued Crisis in Charitable Organizations. (9/13/04) By The Brookings Institution's Paul C. Light. The confidence level in charitable organizations continues to languish well below pre-September 11 levels. Light points out that charitable organizations "did not get any of the post-September 11 "rally" in confidence that boosted government and other civic institutions, but received all of the decline as America returned to a semblance of normalcy in 2002."
