Peter Berns, Chief Executive Officer

Peter Berns is the Chief Executive Officer of the Standards for Excellence Institute and Executive Director of the Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations (Maryland Nonprofits), the Institute's sponsoring organization.   Under Peter's leadership since 1992, Maryland Nonprofits has grown to become one of the largest and most successful state associations of nonprofit organizations in the country. Peter has been instrumental in the creation and replication of the Standards for Excellence program. He has been active in supporting the development of nonprofit associations and management support organizations all over the nation, and served for several years on the Board of Directors of the National Council of Nonprofit Associations. In 2002, The Daily Record awarded Peter an Innovator of the Year Award for his leadership in creating the Standards for Excellence Replication Program.  Additionally, in 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005 Peter was named to the Nonprofit Times list of the Nonprofit Times Power and Influence Top 50. An attorney by profession, Peter has a long history of community service, most recently leading the creation of Business Volunteers Unlimited, Maryland, a collaborative effort between Maryland Nonprofits and Volunteer Central of Maryland to replicate the Business Volunteers Unlimited program in Cleveland. Peter received his JD, cum laude , from Harvard Law School and has an LLM in advocacy from Georgetown University Law Center. He received his BA in psychology, magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania. Peter supervises the national and Maryland components of the Standards for Excellence.

Amy Coates Madsen, Program Director
Amy joined Maryland Nonprofits in 1995 and began working on the development of the Standards for Excellence program in 1996. She is responsible for coordinating all aspects of the Standards for Excellence certification program in Maryland and at the national level.  Amy also serves as the primary staff contact for efforts related to the Standards for Excellence licensed replication partners and evaluation of the impact of the project.  She has taught at the Johns Hopkins University Certificate on Nonprofit Management Program and has been invited to participate in numerous speaking and writing engagements on ethics and accountability in nonprofit organizations. Amy also volunteers with several nonprofit organizations in leadership positions, including the largest Methodist church in Baltimore City, American Red Cross of Central Maryland, and Central Maryland CAN TOO.

Angineeki Jones, Standards for Excellence Certification Manager

Angineeki joined Maryland Nonprofits in April 2006 and is responsible for coordinating the certification programs in Maryland and national certification program offered through the Institute. Prior to joining Maryland Nonprofits, Angineeki was the Senior Program Manager of Share Our Strength's multi-site nutrition education program and oversaw the program evaluation, training, technical assistance, and resource management of 14 replication sites. Angineeki has also worked as the Coordinator for International Relations in the Kagoshima Prefectural Government in Japan for two years where she taught English and International Education to community members and students. Angineeki has a Master of Public Administration from New York University's Robert F. Wagner School of Public Service and a Bachelor of Arts in English from Spelman College.

Justin Pollock, Associate Director of Training Services

Justin joined Maryland Nonprofits in June 2006. As the Associate Director of Training Services, he is responsible for the development and coordination of the Standards for Excellence educational efforts. He brings a diverse set of experiences to the organization as an educator and organizational consultant. Prior to coming to Maryland Nonprofits, Justin worked as an independent consultant providing technical assistance to nonprofits in Washington DC and the San Francisco Bay Area. His nonprofit work includes Board development, Board retreat facilitation, strategic planning, program development, technology integration, and staff development training. He has more than 15 years of experience in the education field with an extensive background in the areas of leadership development, organizational management, group process facilitation, curriculum development, experiential learning, and adult education.  Justin received a dual B.A. in Organizational Theory and Environmental Studies from Pitzer College and a Masters degree in Education from Stanford University.
